How to Prevent Burnout and Stay Balanced

I'm back after a nice long break from the world so to speak. There were plenty of things I could blog about, but I just wasn't feeling up to it.

Over the past year, so much has happened; good, bad and indifferent. Last year, I decided to trust me.

Some days I felt like taking on the world and in my own way I did. I did as much as I could within that day. Then there were days I felt like doing absolutely nothing and that I did. I did nothing.

I allowed myself to rest and recharge. It was an up and down cycle. Sometimes I found myself doing absolutely nothing for a full week or until the overachiever in me would say enough.

Over time, I realized that I was feeling more accomplished than I ever had. By the time I looked up, the 2016 ball was getting ready to drop and I had actually accomplished much more than I had in long time.

In 2015, I obtained a Master's degree, substantially increased my salary over two promotions, purchased a home, established and strengthened relationships, started a blog and other personal accomplishments that are victories in my heart. It was an awesome year for me and I'm sure listening to my mind and body made the difference.

As a server at the Cheesecake Factory in college, I learned about the term "being burnt out". It describes what many servers would experience.

They would come in with high hopes for their new gig, work double shifts from Monday-Sunday and within 6 months, they would be so over the job, so overworked, so overwhelmed that they would just give up and quit.

Unfortunately, we can't just up and quit life if you want to actually live. It's so easy to find yourself "burnt out" on life when you don't take the opportunity to recharge. Your mind and body will let you know when it's time to break.

All you have to do is listen.

As opposed to beating yourself up about being tired, or out of it, or over it, or done, allow yourself to find your balance again.

As long as you continue working on your goals when your time of rest is up, you will find that you still feel accomplished about where you're headed in the end.

We cannot control all of life's ups and downs, but we can control how we choose to handle them.
